Mission Statement
The Rose City Rollers' (RCR) mission is to serve women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals who want to play the team sport of roller derby, connect with an inclusive community, and realize their power both on skates and off.
About This Cause
The Rose City Rollers is a 501c3 nonprofit and roller derby league serving over 400 skaters ages 7-65+! We host over 70 games a year, over 50 hours of practices each week at our facility, and countless camps, workshops, intro series, training, and more! Our community is made up of a legion of dedicated volunteers, die hard fans, loyal supporters and donors, sponsors, families, lifelong friendships, peers, mentors, officials, outstanding coaches, new and seasoned athletes, folks of all backgrounds, genders, and body types- brought together through a collective love of our sport and an unwavering dedication to growing its visibility. As more harmful anti-trans and anti-LGBTQIA2S+ policies and sentiments become more prevalent- we stand firmly in support of our membership, 13% of whom identify as trans and over 65% identify as LGBTQIA2S+. Rose City Rollers will always remain an inclusive athletic space where skaters can play a full contact team sport while feeling valued, affirmed, and seen. Our vision is to create a local and global sports community that is inclusive and transformative. We pursue this by doing everything in our power to keep our community safe, inclusive, and accessible! Programs include: - Scholarships for youth and adults, with a priority on trans and BIPOC applicants. These cover dues, insurance, uniforms, and travel. - Rent n Roll, a free gear lending library stocked with high quality protective gear and skates that our skaters are free to use as needed. - SkateMobile- our mobile skate truck that goes beyond the walls of our facility, collaborates with local organizations, and hosts free and subsidized skate events supplied with trained coaches, free skates and protective gear, and RCR's affirming, safe athletic ethos. Partners include/have included Brown Girl Rise, TeenForce, Native American Youth Association, Portland Parks & Rec Lunch & Play, Active Children Portland, p;ear, and so many more! - A comprehensive coach training in conflict deescalation, anti-racism, team dynamics, and more. Our Gender Inclusivity Statement: In line with our mission to foster an inclusive community, our league welcomes trans and gender-expansive athletes — regardless of their pronouns or gender presentation — who feel most comfortable playing women’s roller derby. Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Mission Statement: The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee exists to lead the Rose City Rollers in the essential intersectional work of making our sport and our league a place where past and present inequity and injustice are brought to the surface and addressed with compassion, honesty, and integrity, to the benefit of our membership and our surrounding community. We provide our league leadership and member body with resources, policies, and findings that break down barriers to participation and play, reinforce equal ownership and standing for marginalized league members, and build supportive relationships with communities our sport has historically ignored. We lead by example and approach this difficult work knowing it requires sustained commitment. When we make mistakes in the process, we will listen, adapt, and learn.
