Mission Statement
The Subversive Theater Collective (STC) is a New York State 501-C.3 nonprofit theater organization, incorporated in 2004. The STC has a unique mission and serves a singular niche in the Buffalo theater community.. It is the only theater in Western New York that focuses exclusively on producing plays that reflect the historical and current social issues most relevant to the current issues and events confronting our society and its citizens. The STC does not endorse, promote or advocate any single political philosophy or position on those social issues. Rather, our mission is simply to present plays that serve to encourage and provide and stimulate a more in-depth thought, discussion, debate and consideration of those historical and current issues and themes through a diverse theatrical repertoire. Our plays draw attention to social issues relevant to our community and society. We seek to both entertain and inspire our audiences. Our productions serve as a catalyst to educate and inform our audiences, and to stimulate their increased civic involvement, responsibility and action. The impact of this focus is to increase citizen knowledge, involvement and participation in the democratic process in matters important to them. An educated and informed citizenry makes for a stronger society for all. We see the mission of STC to increase and encourage citizen knowledge, participation and action concerning the important issues facing our local and national communities. It is also within the mission of STC to provide artistically strong, professional productions of the highest artistic quality. The purpose of art is not only to educate and inform, but also to entertain. Annually, STC selects, produces and presents five to eight plays each season selected by our Artistic Director and Board that represent the social-political issues of highest interest and relevance in any given year. We contract with a changing roster of local artistic and professional to produce and present our plays. Finally, Our mission calls us to reach out and engage non- traditional theatre audiences, including youth, minorities and low-income individuals, in order to introduce and expose them to this art form, perhaps for the first time, and thereby contributing to a wider cross-representative theater-going audience in Erie County.
