Mission Statement

Chelsea Opera is a professional opera company that produces fully staged operas with chamber orchestra, classical concerts, and other musical endeavors.

About This Cause

Founded in 2004 by professional singers Lynne Hayden-Findlay and Leonarda Priore, Chelsea Opera serves two constituencies: singers and audiences that enjoy live musical performances. For singers, Chelsea Opera has given hundreds of artists the chance to practice their craft in a supportive professional setting in a NYC venue with chamber orchestra. For audiences, Chelsea Opera’s productions of new and classic repertoire provide enthusiasts and newcomers the chance to see high quality productions with chamber orchestra in a relaxed and welcoming location with ticket prices that are affordable to a broad spectrum of the community. Performances take place in locations where the intimacy and superior acoustics make the experience exceedingly attractive for all involved. Originally conceived to present full scaled, classic operas such as "Cavalleria Rusticana", "Pagliaci", "Le Nozze di Figaro", "Don Giovanni", "Tosca", et. al, with chamber orchestra, production choices have evolved to include regional and world premieres of contemporary works such as Henry Mallicone's "Emperor Norton", Matt Harris's "The Mark of Cain", Gary Fagin's "A Distant Love...songs of John and Abigail Adams", and several works by Tom Cipullo including "Glory Denied", "Josephine", and "The Parting". Its 17th season was cut short by the pandemic. Despite that, Chelsea Opera continues to be present in the opera world. A series of interviews with former Chelsea Opera artists...checking in to find out where they are, how they are, what they are doing to nourish their artistry during the pandemic, and what they are looking forward to one we are "in the clear" helped to bridge the Covid gap. After the New Year, several archival videos of past productions with be available for viewing on a limited basis. During 2021, Chelsea Opera expanded its musical presence by producing a number of events in upstate New York, i.e., Utica and Syracuse, due to the relocation of its General Manager, Leonarda Priore, and also home to its new Producing Artistic Director, Garrett Heater. Many of these concerts were in open-air locations to abide by the new norm of social distancing, and in spaces not typically thought of as classical concert venues: a backyard "Under the Mulberry Tree" and a shopping mall that featured handmade crafts. A two-person 5-minute opera, "Sidewalk Serenade" was also commissioned for alternating voices (S/M, T/B, S/B, M/T) and presented on the streets of Syracuse in a pop-up fashion throughout the day. From its upstate location, it was logical to produce a video concert, "Reimagine: Forging the Future with Song", commissioning four composers to create an art song for singer and piano that each presented from their virtual space. The combined virtual concert was made available on-line. Shortly afterwards, the company finally returned in November 2021 to NYC for an in-person/live streamed concert, "Songs of Summers Past", and a year later produced the NYC premiere of Cipullo's "The Parting". Our covid world is an erratic one. However, now in its 19th season, Chelsea Opera has always ben able to "turn on a dime", make lemonade out of lemons, and continually seeks to produce the best art and live music performances possible without taking short cuts For this reason, the company not only looks forward to a productive musical season, both in NYC and upstate New York, but wishes the world a safer and healthier 2023.
