Mission Statement
To empower Vietnamese American refugee and immigrant families to achieve personal and family acculturation and self-sufficiency while nurturing community service and youth leadership.
About This Cause
Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is a grassroots organization with skilled volunteers at its heart devoted to helping refugees and immigrants recapture their dignity, initiative and ability to support themselves. Our goal is to help immigrant and refugee families integrate fully and successfully into Seattle and the greater Washington communities by acquiring the necessary language, technical and cultural skills needed for independent living. While our focus is on the Vietnamese-American community, all immigrants are welcome. Services include English as a Second Language (ESL) and Technology as a Second Language (for adults). Technology skills help parents of kids in the Seattle Public Schools to stay involved in their children’s education. For adults, it is critical for every resident to have technology skills for education, employment, civic engagement, and staying in touch with family. In addition, the immigrant and refugee population is not static but accounts for a large percentage of the population growth in King County. We directly serve on average over 1,500 people per year, our programs include: · Conversational ESL: Practical and relevant, we offer multi-level, bilingual classes twice per week. · Digital literacy: Focusing primarily on computer and iPad skills, this class meets twice per week to help clients build skills to work and connect with the city. We also allow walk-in access to the computer lab. · Citizenship and Naturalization: When skills allow, focus on harnessing skills for the US citizenship exam is built into our other classes. · Information and Referral Services: About 33% of our Executive Director’s time is spent providing assistance to families and individuals regarding accessing services and navigating administrative challenges in areas such as education, health, employment, and immigration. We have a firm working relationship with other agencies who specialize in these services through a culturally competent lens reflective of our community’s needs. · Community Building Activities: We have helped plan and every year participate in events such as Tet in Seattle and the Moonlamp Festival, contributing to Seattle’s cultural enrichment. Our Executive Director is also active in many different advocacy circles in the city, including public safety, affordable housing, and urban development.
