About This Cause
CASA of South Central Missouri Provides Advocacy for Abused and Neglected Children in the 25th Judicial District. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children. CASA of SCMO is a part of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association. National CASA began in 1977 when Dr. David Soukup, a Seattle judge became concerned over the decisions he had to make about the future of abused and neglected children whose cases came before him. He worried about whether he had enough or the right kind of information to make such an important decision. He decided to enlist the help of volunteers to assist him. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) was born to this idea. Their goal is to alert the court to the child's needs; tracking their progress towards a permanent home. CASA volunteers assist in providing substantive information to aid in the placement of the child. Local children's service providers expresses a need for the help of CASA volunteers. In 2004, a needs assessment of the 25th Judicial Circuit was conducted, resulting in the start-up of CASA of South Central Missouri-25th Judicial Circuit. Due to the large number of cases for which social workers were responsible and the frequency of court reviews, they were unable to meet with the children as needed to adequately prepare for their best representation in court. The judges endorsed the idea of CASA. It was their belief that a CASA volunteer could serve a minimal number of cases; and thereby have the ability to have more intensive contact with the children, and provide more in-depth information to the court. This is the mission of CASA of South Central Missouri
