Mission Statement
We envision a society in which consumer product producers take primary responsibility for the environmental, health, economic, and social impacts of their products. When producers design and manage their products with the environment in mind, the products we enjoy will become less toxic and more reusable and recyclable. PSI strives to achieve the following financial, social, and environmental goals with every initiative we undertake: - Reduce waste, maximize reuse, and boost recycling while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and the use of toxic chemicals - Minimize waste management costs, particularly for taxpayers and government agencies - Create safe and desirable recycling and resource management jobs
About This Cause
The Product Stewardship Institute is a policy expert and consulting nonprofit that powers the emerging circular economy to ensure products are responsibly managed from design to end of life. In 2000, PSI pioneered product stewardship in the United States by convening diverse stakeholders to build extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies and programs. Drawing on global best practices and expansive multinational relationships, our expert testimony and model legislation have helped enact 141 EPR laws in 33 states across 20 product categories, including packaging. Our members include state, local, and tribal governments in 48 states, and we partner with more than 120 businesses, academic institutions, environmental nonprofits, and international governments. Together, we advance scalable solutions that protect people and the planet. PSI is also fiscal sponsor to similarly minded nonprofit organizations, the Mass Green Network and the New York Product Stewardship Council. The Mass Green Network is a peer-to-peer collective linking grassroots activists and local groups across Massachusetts. Mass Green Network's mission is to protect the earth, its resources, and its inhabitants by connecting community groups, fostering grassroots civic capacity, catalyzing volunteer activism, and bridging demographic divides. The organization has over 700 active members and over 1200 affiliates from every corner of the state, and an extraordinary record of achievement. The resources (fact sheets, slide decks, legislative language, and citizen's guides), drawn from the experience of municipalities in Massachusetts and elsewhere, have helped Mass Green Network's members pass more than 100 bylaws, ordinances, and regulations to reduce plastic waste since October 2015. The New York Product Stewardship Council (NYPSC) promotes product stewardship as the priority policy for solid waste management in New York State. Product stewardship policies shift waste management off taxpayers in order to reduce public costs. Such policies can also promote improvements in product and packaging design creating environmental sustainability. NYPSC is comprised primarily of representatives of local government agencies who work together with state solid waste officials, businesses, recyclers, and the environmental community to achieve shared goals. This unique partnership has achieved notable success in integrating the principles of product stewardship into the policy and economic structures of New York State. Since its founding in 2009, producers in 5 product categories – consumer electronics, rechargeable batteries, mercury thermostats, pharmaceuticals, and most recently paint – are engaged in this innovative materials management approach in NYS. Additionally, the groundwork has been laid for a similar approach for packaging, primary batteries, mattresses, and carpet.
