Mission Statement

A World Aware, Inc. (AWA) exists to educate, empower, and encourage people from historically disadvantaged and impoverished communities, primarily in South Africa’s Limpopo and Gauteng provinces.

About This Cause

OUR PROJECTS A World Aware, Inc. (AWA)’s projects range from training teachers and improving schools to teen leadership camps and building gardens. One of AWA’s main focus points is to give children ages 0-6 years old better nutritional, educational, and physical opportunities in their crèches (preschools and day cares) in South Africa. Constructing playgrounds, providing school supplies, and training teachers on the developmental and nutritional needs of the children are just a few of the projects included in this focus area. AWA seeks to help children of all ages learn and develop into functioning, successful contributors to society by giving them proper resources and support. For more information and examples of AWA projects, visit our website at www.aworldaware.org. ABOUT US AWA’s purpose is to provide real, lasting change to communities in their areas of greatest need. AWA works internationally, primarily in South Africa, with local partners that are already serving people, such as schools, day cares, community centers, individuals, and teachers. These partners identify the needs within their communities, and then together we develop sustainable solutions for people who want to help themselves, not programs that cause a dependence on AWA. Realizing that one area of need does not address an entire problem, AWA strives to incorporate educational objectives, physical resources, and moral principles into solutions, depending on what recipients and partners perceive as appropriate and useful. In this collaborative, holistic approach, resources and values from local cultures are also utilized, creating a well-rounded process that helps to ensure accountability and stability. AWA PRINCIPLES 1) We do not give handouts, but rather meet people where their actual need is. 2) We do not duplicate effort that can already be accomplished by an individual or organization we partner with. 3) We work with autonomous and local groups and individuals. 4) We design and implement projects that are ongoing and continuous. 5) We do not create dependencies on our teams or organization. OUR VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are the backbone of AWA, as we are staffed and operated by a volunteer base. AWA utilizes the resources, skills, and talents of its volunteers to help create workable solutions for community needs in South Africa, as well as teach local partners and individuals the value of volunteering. Our volunteers are recruited from around the world, and we currently have permanent volunteer teams in Gauteng and Limpopo in South Africa. We are grateful for our volunteers; AWA couldn’t make a difference without them. Please reach out if you are interested in making a difference with AWA by joining a volunteer team. OUR GOALS 1. AWA has written and developed a curriculum on Early Childhood Development (ECD) for teachers who have no other opportunity to gain this knowledge. These people are still taking care of children, not knowing how to adequately prepare them for a successful life. AWA is an accredited organization in ECD by SETA and QCTO in South Africa providing minimal cost and free training to these teachers. We currently have a waiting list of over 400 teachers who want and need this training. Each teacher represents a minimum of 50 children they care for, with some teachers taking care of over 300 children in their school. We aim to provide a permanent training facility with all the resources needed to effectively meet ECD training best practices, including hired and trained staff, materials to teach, and the ability to provide a government-approved completion certificate to help teachers on their career path. This program will help to ensure that young children receive the mental, physical, emotional, and moral support they need to learn and grow successfully. 2. AWA has initiated a gardening project at preschools that includes planting and harvesting a variety of vegetables, so that children learn how to create sustainable, nutritional meal options. Included in this is a moringa project, which we are currently expanding both for the health benefits to the children but also for the economic benefit of the teacher and the school. 3. AWA has established a small computer lab in Limpopo to teach job skills and to allow students in junior high access to technology for their assignments. AWA would like to expand this project by hiring tutors in class subjects as well as in the use of technology. WAYS YOU CAN HELP 1.
