Mission Statement

The mission of the Maliheh Free Clinic is to provide free, same-day access to high-quality urgent medical care for all qualified patients. The Maliheh Free Clinic was founded with the sole purpose of rescuing those members of our community who are in the most critical need of our help.

About This Cause

The Maliheh Free Clinic (MFC) promotes economic and community development through health and wellness to underserved individuals in our community by offering a wide range of medical services to those most in need. The Clinic focuses primarily on preventive care, and program funding provides additional services, which include physician and nursing evaluations, laboratory studies, x-ray and ultrasound imaging, sub-specialty consultation, physical therapy, and the ability to provide patients with assistance in obtaining medication and diabetic monitoring equipment/education, wheelchairs, walkers, nebulizers and other vital equipment. The Clinic is an IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2005 by an emergency room physician concerned about the impact of uninsured patients seeking primary care services in the emergency room because they had no other options for care. Over the last 16 years, his vision to provide consistent care to those in need has evolved into an organization that is well respected in the community for providing quality medical care to those most in need. In 2023, the MFC had: • 15,413 patient visits • 600 active volunteers • 28,000 donated volunteer hours • 5123 individual patients All Clinic patients are families living at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. These families cannot afford health insurance, nor are they eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Our patient population is 72% Hispanic; 13% Caucasian; 8% Pacific Islander; 3% Asian American; 2% African American; and 2% other. Without the Maliheh Free Clinic, these individuals and families would have limited or no access to health care services, eventually ending up as charity care patients in our community’s local emergency rooms. The Maliheh Free Clinic is a 2020 Standards Gold Rated member of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC), in addition to being a member of the Utah Free Clinics Association, Promise South Salt Lake, Promise Millcreek, United Way Collective Impact Coalition, Salt Lake Suicide Prevention Coalition, and the Salt Lake Mental Health Coalition. Other long-standing system partnerships include the Utah Department of Health, Salt Lake County Department of Health, Intermountain Healthcare, Utah Partners for Health, Moran Eye Center, The Eye Institute of Utah, B.D. Medical, Merck, and the Association for Utah Community Health. We place a strong emphasis on training the next generation of medical providers while simultaneously serving those most in need. The Clinic maintains significant, longtime partnerships with Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Salt Lake Community College, Rocky Mountain University, and the University of Utah’s medical school, physician assistant program, and nursing school. Twice a week, students from the U of U’s P.A. program operate a student-led clinic that offers a hands-on learning experience for these students within a clinical setting.
