Mission Statement
Open City Advocates works with children and young adults trapped in the juvenile justice system to elevate their voices and realize their full potential. Through zealous representation, holistic mentoring, and systemic reform, we assist our clients to reintegrate into their family and community while fighting for a fair and compassionate justice system, both in DC and nationwide.
About This Cause
Open City Advocates fills two gaping holes in the juvenile legal system. One, because children determined to be delinquent by DC’s juvenile court do not receive adequate protections after sentencing, we provide zealous individualized legal representation and mentoring. Two, because the juvenile system too often fails the children it is intended to serve, we catalyze systemic improvements that will benefit all court-involved youth. Open City Advocates is a small organization with a big impact. We are modeling an innovative solution in juvenile defense in Washington, DC, and nationwide. The racial disparity of youth in the delinquency system is extreme, especially here in the nation’s capital. Open City Advocates’ program design begins to level the playing field by ensuring each youth has a dedicated and zealous defender with specialized expertise in representing youth as they transition into young adulthood. By collaborating with the courts, DC agencies, and other organizations, we are magnifying our impact both locally and nationally.
