About This Cause
COAST GUARD HOLIDAY STOCKINGS FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN It is difficult to imagine a life without a home to go to each night. Yet this is the unsettled life of a homeless child. Coast Guard Family and Friends Holiday Stockings for Homeless Children’s mission is to bring needed basic items as well as small fun gifts and toys to our most needy vulnerable children. Begun in 1996 by Coast Guard wives, we have delivered 56,973 stockings to homeless youth, ages infant through teens, living in shelters in the Puget Sound area. In 2018 we delivered stockings to 4,606 children. This includes 700 street kids we reach through youth shelters. CG Holiday Stockings is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 charity in our 24th year with operating cost of 3% and 97% of donations going directly to the children. Our organization’s volunteer six member Board of Directors oversees the planning, management and budgeting for all the charity’s activities. For funding to purchase gifts, we seek donations, grants and matching funds from businesses and the community. We invite businesses and civic groups to include our charity in their holiday giving plans with funds or collections of new small gifts to help fill the children’s stocking. We welcome community groups or volunteers to work on various projects from sewing stockings, baby bibs and comfort tag blankets and making or crocheting warm hats and scarves or other gift items from our “Wish List” (found on our web site) or to set up and tend company or community drop boxes to collect gifts. Each gift given is a smile for a child. In 2018 over 15,000 hours were put in by volunteers working on various projects to meet our mission goals. We welcome new volunteers. We hold our annual two-day Stocking Stuffing Event, the second weekend in December at the Coast Guard Base, Seattle. On Friday we sort gifts from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On Saturday we stuff stockings from 10:00 AM to noon. Shelters give us the gender and age of all their children. A stocking will be filled individually for each child from age appropriate tables by our volunteers. Over 700 volunteers from business, community, church, school, clubs, families and individuals will come to assist us sort gifts and fill stockings for 4,500 children. Examples of shelter recommended gifts are; hats, gloves, socks, baby items, tooth brush and paste, hair care & accessories, lip balm/gloss, deodorant, nail clippers, pocket sized games, balls, school supplies, jewelry, small craft kits, crayons & coloring books, colored pencils, paperback books and puzzles, ear buds, healthy snacks, hand and foot warmers, $5 gift cards or other small gifts that would fit into a stocking to delight a child. The filled stockings are boxed and delivered by our volunteers to the shelters and given to the children at a Holiday Party, or to parents. We receive heartfelt notes of thanks from the children, mothers and shelter staff. Some shelters reported the stockings given by Santa or hung by children's beds to give them a sense of normalcy on Christmas morning. We welcome you to join with us as a donor or a volunteer.
