Mission Statement

Clean Water for Haiti exists to provide access to clean water at the household level for Haitian families through the use of Bio-sand water filters.

About This Cause

Clean Water for Haiti started in 2001 with the vision of providing access to safe, clean water to Haitian families in a sustainable way. Through the building and installing of Bio-sand water filters in Haitian homes we're able to accomplish that goal. Families gain access to our subsidized filter program by paying a small co-pay of about $5. This gives their filter value and ensures that they will use and maintain it. Each filter that gets installed receives 3 follow up visits in the first year to ensure that the filter is working correctly and to reinforce the user education with the family. It's also an opportunity to provide sanitation and hygiene education to the family repeatedly. Our follow up program is one of the key parts of what we do, and because of it over 95% of our filters are still in use after the first year. Bio-sand filters are a simple technology. They're essentially a concrete box with sand in them that require very little maintenance and can last for decades, making them an economical and cost effective solution for countries impacted by contaminated water. By working at the household level we are able to give users full control of their filter, and are empowering them to make life changing, healthy decisions for their families. They take the initiative to purchase their filter through our subsidized program, and we essentially provide them with a tool and support that betters their health. To spread the effectiveness of the Bio-sand filter through Haiti we also provide training to other organizations that want to start a filter in the communities that they're currently working in. We believe in local development, so aside from a few key leadership positions, the majority of our staff are local Haitians. Through long term, full time employment we are able to provide marketable skill training that can transfer over to other jobs if needed. The most important thing is that they are able to consistently provide for their families, and they take pride in knowing that their work is bettering the lives of their fellow Haitians. We also believe in supporting the local economy, so we have chosen a style of Bio-sand filter that is made from readily available materials - sand, gravel and cement. Because of this we can purchase all materials in Haiti from local businesses. The work we're doing is literally saving lives every single day, and it's a privilege to be involved in something with such a great impact.
