Mission Statement

MetroSquash is a year round pathway program with the mission of using squash, academics, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and community service to empower Chicago Public School Students to reach their full academic, athletic, and personal potential.

About This Cause

Founded in 2005 with one class of 10 fifth grade students, MetroSquash now serves over 200 students in 5th grade through sophomore year in college in equal parts squash and fitness instruction and academic tutoring and enrichment. The MetroSquash program intends on welcoming a student when they are in fifth grade and sticking with them through high school and post-secondary graduation. By working with students one-on-one in the classroom and on the squash court, staff are able to identify each individual students needs, supporting them academically, physically, and mentally. Students gain opportunities to participate in activities outside of their comfort zone, exploring new cities and states, visiting college campuses, competing in national tournaments, and learn the importance of grit, perseverance, and character. To date, MetroSquash students have accessed over $2.2 million in academic and squash scholarships through the support of MetroSquash. Over 70 students have gained access to high performing high schools in the Chicago-land area and in some cases, nationally at boarding schools. The first cohort of students graduated high school in 2013, with a 100% graduation rate and 100% college acceptance and enrollment rate. The second class followed suit in 2014, and there are now 17 students enrolled at their best-matched colleges and universities. In the spring of 2015, MetroSquash will be moving to its own, safe, and secure home on the corner of 61st and Cottage Grove in the Woodlawn Community of Chicago, where students will be able to grow and thrive.
