Mission Statement

FamilyPoint Resources engages our West Houston community in supportive relationships that build hope, meet needs, and transform lives. We accomplish our mission by working toward mutual growth through listening, playing, and learning in arts, education, and sports programs. Mutual Growth: When we come together, all knowing that we are discovering our journey together, all open to being changed by the experiences, we can all grow in amazing new ways. Listening: When we listen well, we can help give voice to joys and hurts that often go unspoken, empower those who feel powerless, and bring value to those who feel unloved. Playing: When we play we develop habits of healing, understanding, independence, and interdependence that teach us how to listen, learn, and grow well together. Learning: When we learn we explore differences, acquire knowledge, make mistakes, collaborate, and utilize resources that allow us to develop as individuals and communities.

About This Cause

The Nottingham Park Area The Nottingham Park Area is a pocket of apartments and condos nestled between Memorial and the Energy Corridor in West Houston. The area is home to an amazingly diverse community, though many of the families living in the area are under-served and under-resourced. Roughly 85% of the families in the Nottingham Park Area are considered low-income, and have an annual household income of less than half the average income for our zipcode (77079). FamilyPoint works closely with area schools, specifically the schools in the Spring Forest Middle School feeder pattern, and have a growing relationship with Stratford High School. Need While we work with families as a whole, FamilyPoint focuses on students in our area. The reality for many students in the Nottingham Park Area is that they start school behind, due to no fault of their own. Different priorities, pressures, and lower exposures to a number of resources that help prepare children for school all come together to lead many students to have to play catch up from the moment they first walk into a school. The same factors that start kids off behind, also lead to them being ill-equipped to keep pace with the demands of our education system. The result is a large group of students that do not experience success in our schools and quickly begin to give up, not only on school, but also on themselves. Even in communities with great schools like those in the Nottingham Park Area, this pattern is repeated over and over. Hope But there is hope. Students who do not thrive in traditional academic settings often begin to thrive when given chances to excel in other areas. When given the opportunity to explore talents through arts and athletics, when students consistently see they are valued by relationships with caring adults, and when students gain access to resources that they did not have before, things can start to change. As skills, talents, and relationships develop, a child’s perspective of themselves and their future can begin to change. This change often carries over into the classroom and other social settings, allowing students who had given up on themselves to see they can achieve more in their lives and contribute more to their community than they dreamed was possible. Through Sports, Arts, Education, and Support programs, FamilyPoint has invested in building relationships with students and families in our community. The programs themselves help participants to grow, building an identity that says they are loved, capable, talented, and most importantly that they can shape their own future. All of these beliefs help to reframe what is a prevalent self-understanding for many in our community; that success, stability, and worth are unattainable. Of greater value than the program contents are the relationships built through FamilyPoint. It is in these relationships that lives are changed, that children’s understanding of themselves are reshaped, and that support networks are built. As FamilyPoint walks through life with families in our community, the programs become a meeting place, where dreams, talents, joys, and pains are shared. The relationships built bring families from all sides of the community together to be a true community, all in need of different things, all enriching each others lives in beautiful ways. As this happens, the place of belonging that FamilyPoint has become for so many in need in our community, actually becomes a place where we all find that we belong to each other and can be a part of shaping a better future together.
