About This Cause

The Job Foundation eradicates present and future financial poverty and greatly reduces the risk of financial disadvantage for children. This is accomplished through a comprehensive approach that stresses financial education, stewardship training, academic achievement and attainment of key resources to increase financial stability. The Job Foundation envisions a world where all children, from every socio-economic background, are well-equipped with all the financial skills, knowledge, and assets needed for their financial and life success both in childhood and into adulthood. Students enroll in the program beginning in Elementary School and stay in the program until they graduate from High School. During this long-term program, students receive financial education, mentoring, and earnings conditional to their grades in school. 60% of these earnings are stored in a long-term savings account, with a goal of $3,400 accumulated in savings upon High School graduation. A portion of these assets will be used towards Driver’s Education, as collateral to build a positive credit score, and other necessities to help launch them into financially independent living. In addition to teaching the importance of saving money, it is equally important to teach children how to spend money wisely. The remaining 40% of earnings may be spent during supervised shopping trips. Students fill out a spending plan, choose to donate money to a charity and/or save extra money, balance their checkbook register, and learn about comparison shopping to help them make wise financial decisions. Education is the cornerstone of The Job Foundation’s program. Financial and leadership lessons occur after school regularly for all students; Elementary students receive a lesson every trimester, weekly for Middle School students, and monthly for High Schoolers. The curriculum for the financial lessons is based on Jump$tart Standards, the same standards national banks use for their education curriculum. Students learn about a variety of topics including, but not limited to; wants vs. needs, banking, insurance, taxes, credit score, volunteering/giving back to their community, and resume building/interviewing skills. The Job Foundation is a certified mentoring program. Each student in the program is paired with a volunteer mentor. Mentors encourage students in both their academic and life activities. According to the National Mentoring Partnership, "Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations...and mentoring has significant positive effects on two early warning indicators that students may be falling off track: high levels of absenteeism...and recurring behavior problems". These positive results in mentoring relationships are reflected in great improvements of the student’s grades, attendance, and behavior in school.
