Mission Statement

Staged! exists to tell compelling human stories through song, and to nurture talent both onstage and off. With musical theatre pared down to its essential elements—music, story, and song—Staged! produces stellar musical theatre and provides pre-professional training to young people. And we never put musicians in a pit.

About This Cause

Staged! was established July 8, 2005. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting high caliber musical theatre productions, and empowering and educating young people by providing quality training and opportunities in the arts. Staged! is run by Artistic Director/Founder Chanda Hall; Executive Director, Diane Englert; and Associate Artistic Director Paul Angelo. Staged! has a core team of 11 Teaching Artists and is governed by a Board of Directors. Since its inception in 2005, Staged! has reached over 14,000 audience members and, most significantly, over 2,500 young artists through our work, from summer camps to our year-long Conservatory Program to fully staged professional productions. We provide a home for the emerging theatre artists of tomorrow to hone their craft under the tutelage of acclaimed and experienced professional theatre mentors. We also engage the community with surround programming and events focusing on the social, historical, and scientific aspects of our productions in a series of free lectures, panels, and talkbacks. Every production since our inception in 2005 has involved young people both onstage and backstage. Our student-only, re-imagined production of Les Misérables sold out its run at the World Trade Center in Spring 2008. The company was awarded three Portland Area Musical Theatre Awards (PAMTAs) including Best Ensemble for this show. In 2010 Staged! partnered with Miracle Theatre to produce Songs for a New World (winning 4 Drammy awards). Staged! began a friendship with the composer and multiple Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, bringing him to Portland three times for concerts and master classes with our students. Staged! has produced two other musicals by the composer: 13 (the Portland premiere in 2012; Drammy for Outstanding Pit Ensemble – an orchestra of students) and Parade (2014 – PAMTA for Outstanding Ensemble). Staged! launched the professional premiere of an original work by a local writer in 2013: Ablaze: an a cappella musical thriller, which focused on issues relevant to high school teens. Involving 27 young performers, Ablaze swept the 2013 theatre awards and was a critical and popular hit. In 2016, Staged! partnered with triangle productions! to produce the Northwest premiere of the new musical Heathers, based on the cult movie. The show sold to 100% capacity for its initial run and an extension and garnered a record-breaking 10 nominations for local theatre awards, with Malia Tippets winning Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Veronica. The producers worked with local teen focused groups Lines for Life (suicide prevention), Oregon Safe School and Communities Coalition (for sexual minority teens) and Outside In (homeless youth) to provide free tickets, resources and discussions about issues addressed in the show. Most recently: • In 2014, Staged! became an Artist-In-Residence Company at Artists Repertory Theatre’s Arts Hub, where we have our office and hold our classes. • Staged!’s pre-professional training program, the S! Conservatory, launched in the 2013-14 school year. An audition-only program, the S! Conservatory offers substantive, sequential training with the area’s best Teaching Artists. Students meet weekly and the year culminates in an industry showcase. Our graduating students have gone on to top-notch colleges and universities such as Stanford, Southern Methodist University, Fordham/Ailey, etc. • Staged! started a series of in-home performances/discussions - Salons - devoted to the works of one contemporary composer. As of last season, we structured these salons around the composers of work in our mainstage season, to enhance audience engagement and education.
