Mission Statement
The mission of Wright on the Park, Inc. is to own, preserve, and maintain The Historic Park Inn Hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and to provide continuing education to the public about its place in the context of architectural history.
About This Cause
Wright on the Park achieved 18.5 million project restoring Frank Lloyd Wright's last remaining hotel, the Historic Park Inn Hotel, in Mason City Iowa. When it seemed the old Park Inn Hotel might suffer the wrecking ball or be auctioned to the highest bidder on eBay, former Mason City Mayor Jean Marinos called for a group of local citizens to be formed who would be willing to take on the effort to save it. Thus, Wright on the Park, Inc. was formed in 2005 as a non-profit which made its mission "to own, preserve, and maintain The Historic Park Inn Hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and to provide continuing education to the public about its place in the context of architectural history”. The initial plan was to restore only the hotel, but Wright on the Park soon had the opportunity to purchase the City National Bank section and expand the project to include both sites. With an active board of directors envisioning what the future could hold, fundraising began. In 2009 the actual restoration/rehabilitation phase began. After the completion of the project and opening of the hotel, late in the summer or 2011, Wright on the Park celebrated the reality of its vision. Today, Wright on the Park continues to own the building, is responsible for its ongoing preservation, and offers tours and other educational programming to the public. The hotel is leased to a local hotelier who operates the facility, including the restaurant and lounge. While Mason City boasts two Wright properties, originally there had been plans for more. However, Wright's departure to Europe caused these plans came to a sudden halt. The vacuum created by Wright's withdraw brought other Prairie School architects to Mason City, many former Wright associates. Marion Mahony Griffin, Walter Burley Griffin, Barry Byrne, William Drummond and local architect Einar Broaten combined to create Rock Crest / Rock Glen, located on both sides of Willow Creek, the largest collection of Prairie-styled homes surrounding a natural setting in America. In 2019 Wright on the Park began offering docent led tours of this historic district as well.
