Mission Statement
One Equal Heart strengthens indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico, through high-impact, community-driven development. Through partnerships with in-country organizations, we support programs that harness a community’s social, cultural, spiritual and environmental to alleviate poverty and achieve well-being. One Equal Heart focuses on three programmatic areas that together strengthen indigenous communities and improve their well-being: (1) growing food and economies; (2) building health and nutrition; (3) strengthening language and culture; and (4) advancing women's and children's human rights. We do this by building local capacity through community education and leadership training. One Equal Heart envisions a future in which indigenous families have the capacity and resources they need to create vibrant, sustainable communities.
About This Cause
One Equal Heart Foundation strengthens indigenous Mayan communities in Mexico through high-impact, community-driven programs. In partnership with local organizations, we support development programs that harness a community's social, cultural, spiritual and natural resources to alleviate poverty and achieve well-being. Our programs build the capacities of families and communities so they can drive their own development from within. Programs focus on (1) growing food and economies by partnering with indigenous families to mobilize local food and savings resources and create vibrant local economic opportunities; (2) building health and nutrition by promoting community advocates as they spread effective health and nutrition practices, farm ecologically, and create healthy, sustainable homes; (3) strengthening language and culture by creating relevant educational offerings on the local community radio, through the indigenous library and at training centers in outlying villages; and (4) advancing women's and children's rights by amplifying the voices of indigenous women so they can shape practices that affect their families. We leverage donations and grants to increase our impact by collaborating with other organizations, academics and experts. We deepen our partnership and understanding of challenges in the field by facilitating exchanges and visits to and from Chiapas, Mexico, that lead to innovative responses to the most pressing needs as identified by indigenous communities. We take a long-term view of locally-led social change, working to fundamentally transform the structures that create poverty, discrimination, and environmental degradation.
