FRIENDS OF OAKLAND ANIMAL SERVICES

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide homes, health, and happiness to Oakland’s animals in need. Since our founding in 2005, our primary focus has been to fund programs and activities at Oakland Animal Services that improve services to the people and animals of Oakland beyond the typical expectations of a municipal, open-admission shelter.

About This Cause

Founded in 2005, Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS) is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to support Oakland Animal Services (OAS), the City of Oakland’s animal shelter. FOAS has been a lifeline for Oakland’s most vulnerable animals. What began as a small group of passionate OAS staff and volunteers has grown into a powerful, community-driven movement—funding life-saving programs and giving animals at Oakland Animal Services (OAS) brighter futures. Today, FOAS operates with a budget of nearly $2 million and supports lifesaving programs such as foster care, adoptions, emergency veterinary services, behavioral support, and 14 FOAS-funded staff who work alongside OAS staff every day. These strategic efforts have helped OAS achieve the highest save rate in its history. More than 90% of OAS animals are now saved, up from less than 50% when we started. A powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together.
