Through the arts, Arts Ignite develops agency in young people by inspiring the creative capacity, community, and courage they need to thrive.
About This Cause
In 2006, a group of motivated Juilliard students joined forces with Broadway musical director Mary-Mitchell Campbell to found Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), created with the belief that every young person has a story and a voice that deserves to be heard. In 2022, after 16 years of delivering arts programming in the United States and around the world as ASTEP, the organization stepped into its next stage of growth as Arts Ignite. The name is new, but the passion is the same: to help young people find their voice through the joy and potency of making art. WHAT WE DO We connect exceptional teaching artists with community partners and their youth Arts Ignite teaches young people to think like artists, developing skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Through workshops, residencies, and arts camps, our teaching artists lead communities of young people through arts-rich learning and experiences in varied genres like theater, dance, painting, improvisation, songwriting, videography, photography, and more. At Arts Ignite, we support youth ages 4-21 in developing agency through the arts. We are committed to serving all young people, including youth affected by systemic issues and their effects. These include immigration status, houselessness, gun-violence, incarceration, the justice system, HIV/AIDS, systemic poverty, or the caste system. Building lasting connections between our Teaching Artists, partners, and youth is a core part of our success. Many of Arts Ignite’s hallmark programs have evolved into multi-year partnerships, ushering our youth into adulthood as leaders in their own communities. Arts Ignite champions young people as they build both individual skills and lasting bonds with others.
