About This Cause
Opera on Tap(OOT)'s mission is to expose new audiences to opera and classical music by taking it out of the concert hall and performing it in alternative venues, to aid young performers in their development and to promote and present new classical works of contemporary classical and \ operatic composers.
Founded in 2006 and incorporated in New York in 2007, OOT is a Brooklyn based organization that has blossomed into a national organization with vibrant Chapters currently active in New York City, Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Lafayette LA, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Denton TX, Nashville, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toledo, The Twin Cities and Washington DC. Begun as a grassroots organization, the philosophy behind OOT's expansion is that of local to global. Chapter performances in all locales are populated by local performers and administrated by local organizers interested in keeping opera and classical vocal music viable in mainstream culture. Through its Chapter program OOT has created a large national network of performers, creators, supporters, and audiences.
OOT has gained national recognition as an innovative force on the classical music scene in the media (NY Times, NPR, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, NHK/Japan National Public TV, Current TV, The NY Daily News, WNYC, WFMU, Chicago Today, Chicago Reader, the LA Times, and LA Weekly among others), classical music industry service organizations (Opera America, Musical America), and institutions such as BAM, the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, and New Orleans Opera (which sponsors the New Orleans Chapter).
OOT NYC maintains a busy and diversified performance schedule. Currently OOT presents 3 programs: the Theme of the Month-Opera Home Brew/New Brew program, The Playground Operas, and Roadworks.
