Mission Statement
Established in 2006 Saddlebred Rescue Inc (SBR) is a 501c3 nonprofit working with American Saddle horse breeds to find alternative uses for horses in need where slaughter is likely their only option. Many of the horses we help are used buggy horses from the driving communities in the east of the country. We buy the horses at auctions, rehab them and adopt them out across the country. To date we have worked with over 2,000 horses and the rescue has in rehab at any one time 20 to 40 horses.
About This Cause
SBR is located in NW New Jersey. We are located near what we call ground zero for one of the nation's most active weekly horse auctions in Lancaster Co Pennsylvania. This auction can be a center point for many horses collected by brokers and others largely east of the Mississippi. This auction is also a center for meat buyers that buy horses to ship to plants either in Canada or Mexico. We do what we can to buy and help give horses a second chance subject to the limits of our physical and financial resources. We work with about 100 horses a year that can be new rescues or horses we have adopted out but have been returned. From the beginning we made a pledge to keep tabs on our adopted horses and require a new family to return the horse to us for any reason they can no longer keep their horse. We felt this was a responsibility of a well run rescue and not allow the horses to be recycled through auctions and wind up again in bad situations. Soon after our establishment in 2006 we saw the need to be better organized if we were going to do this long term. We hired a lawyer and an accountant. There is more work than you think to properly maintain your 501c3 compliance, state registrations and various state charity registrations among other issues. About the same time we had the privilege to be supported by the Gaylord Foundation when they established a Matching Grant to support the horses in our rescue. This grant has been renewed multiple times and remains in effect today. n summary we believe we have taken the right steps to provide a well run horse rescue and adoption program operated largely by volunteers. With that said to keep SBR moving forward year to year it is a big challenge to fund the operating budget. More than once we have come to a point that we were not sure if we could continue but somehow someone steps up and helps us through. We appreciate everyone's support, we thank you and our doors are always open.
