Mission Statement

Our school's mission is to intervene in the lives of at-risk children and youth living in the Brinkley Heights community by providing a high-quality, individualized Christian education that promotes academic, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth.

About This Cause

Brinkley Heights Urban Academy demonstrates a commitment to this mission by being more than a school. BHUA is a family that is committed to reaching the students and their families in order to intervene in all areas of life. Academic: BHUA seeks to intervene academically by meeting each student where he/she is. Our teachers assess students, analyze data, and use the data to fill in learning gaps for each individual student. Teachers also utilize computer generated lessons (Edgenuity) that adapt in real time to which skills each individual student needs. Physical: Especially during the past two years, physical activity is more important than ever. With students utilizing more technology, an increase in screen time, and social distancing, it has been important to allow time and space for physical activity and breaks from mask wearing. Our teachers have given “mask breaks” outdoors with proper social distancing that involve exercise, no contact games, walks around the school property, and time to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. We have also allowed each teacher to have their own recess equipment that is social distancing appropriate, sanitized, and kept in their classrooms. Social/Emotional: There was already a great need for social opportunities, but with social distancing and quarantining, our students need more than ever to have social interactions with their peers and the adults in our school. We have taken every opportunity to allow for times of social interaction, while following safety guidelines. Students are allowed to have free time to talk with classmates and teachers during breakfast, lunch, mask breaks, recess, etc. Students are also encouraged to participate in group discussions in class as well as extracurricular activities. BHUA also utilizes social and emotional curriculum to help students with various issues that have impacted them (tragedy, self-esteem, etc.) In addition, students are encouraged to visit the office to speak with administrators, administrative assistants, counselors, etc at any time. Spiritual: Most important to the mission of BHUA is to make a spiritual impact on our students that lasts for generations. Many of our students are introduced to our school through Street Reach Ministries, an outreach program out of Brinkley Heights Baptist Church. Not only do the students learn about Christ at Bible club with Street Reach, but also each and every day at school. Each teacher teaches age appropriate gospel centered Bible lessons with their classes, all students are required to attend the age appropriate chapel program scheduled once per week The four chapel programs are divided as follows: Pre-K through K5, 1st through 3rd grade, 4th through 6th grade, and middle school & high school. Our goal is for students to succeed in all of the mentioned areas, but most importantly to know Jesus, to follow Him, and to share Him with others.
