Mission Statement
Nest is a non-profit organization that unlocks the power of craft to advance economic opportunity and gender equity in the United States and around the world. Craft plays a critical role in connecting women and homebound workers to their local economies all while preserving and promoting important cultural diversity. When artisans and makers have the resources, market access, and tools they need to grow and sustain their businesses, they not only improve their own well-being, but create positive outcomes for their families and their communities. Together, we can unlock the power of craft to help women thrive through sustainable income generation, increased economic mobility, and greater social inclusion.
About This Cause
At the center of Nest’s programming is the Nest Artisan Guild: A global network of 2,000+ creative entrepreneurs who are leveraging art and craft to drive financial and social impact in their communities. Through membership in the Guild, artisan business leaders receive training on leading industry practices and access to tools and resources designed to increase their business acumen at no cost. In the United States, we have a subset of makers and artists called Makers United. Makers United is building a more vibrant and inclusive makers movement by helping maker entrepreneurs attain the resources and market access opportunities they need to thrive. With a focus on elevating BIPOC makers and delivering innovative market access solutions, Makers United ensures that the growing American makers movement is generating opportunity for all makers regardless of gender, race, economic means, or ability. Currently, Nest supports eight Makers United Cities and territories including: Austin/San Antonio, Birmingham, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New York City's Garment District, Puerto Rico, and St. Louis with future locations in Indianapolis and Appalachia. Nest’s Ethical Handcraft Program protects the well-being of workers in decentralized supply chains, ensuring home-based craft work is a safe and viable option for individuals around the world. It is estimated that there are more than 300 million people around the world engaged in small shop and home-based handwork. Nest plays a critical role in bridging the gap between the brands and customers seeking Ethically Handcrafted product and the artisans producing that product. Our Seal ensures that artisans and handworkers have a safe and equitable work environment—even as they work outside the traditional four-walled factory.
