Mission Statement

Since 1996, Lump has expanded the possibilities for artists and curators through the support of ambitious projects in exhibition, performance, research and documentation while broadening the community’s exposure to new artistic practices and dialogue. In 2016, Lump officially became a 501(c)3 non profit organization. As an arts organization created to engage and support artists and their audiences, our mission includes a multifaceted approach: To support artists who take risks and help them realize new ambitious projects; to coordinate a strong support system for visual artists; to promote relationships between artists and the community; and to increase access to the visual arts and arts education for the citizens of North Carolina. Lump does not discriminate in any of its operations on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, genetic information, or any other characteristic.

About This Cause

Lump began in 1996 when founders, Bill Thelen and Med Byrd transformed a lackluster cinderblock building, formerly an upholstery shop, then a cobbler’s shop, then a night club called, The Blue Lady Lounge, into a vibrant exhibition space that offered a small bundle affordable studios for artists. Over the twenty years that Lump ran as an artist-run space and into today as a non-profit, Lump has served the North Carolina community by providing a space for the presentation of non-commercial, thought-provoking art, while acting as a pipeline between North Carolina and the world of contemporary art. Lump has brought rigor and professionalism to the hard driving experimentation and self determination that defined its inception. In 2017, LUMP restructured into a 501(c)3 non profit organization called Art Now, doing business as Lump. This was a measure to bolster resources, so that Lump could continue to serve artists in the collaborative spirit under which it was created and conduct its program without compromise. Lump has tasked itself with challenging the public’s notion of art by continuing to embrace its mystique through work by artists whose unconventional visions of contemporary art and life, all too often, go unseen. Lump’s core mission is twofold, and its program should be viewed as one that radiates outward while simultaneously drawing energies inward. First, it seeks to expand the possibilities for artists and curators through the support of ambitious projects in exhibition, performance, and research that may garner them attention on a national level. Second, it works to broaden the community’s exposure to contemporary art by inviting them inside the individual or collaborative practices from which that art manifests. The essential element to this inclusion is a broad dialogue that integrates artists into the general community through public exhibitions, film, performance and lecture series, while simultaneously offering the community an intimate look into the creative rhythms of artists.
