Mission Statement

Fugees Family is advancing educational justice for refguee and immigrant youth. By 2025, one in four students in the U.S. education system will be an English language learner (ELL), many of them from refugee or immigrant backgrounds. The organization works to afford refugee youth with equal access to educational opportunities with the goal that each Fugee will graduate from high school and attend post-secondary school, enter an intensive internship/apprentice program, or enter the workforce equipped to provide for his/her family in a way that will enable them to break free of the generational cycle of poverty.

About This Cause

Fugees Family, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization advancing educational justice for refugee and immigrant youth. Devoted to working with children who have recently resettled in the US and their families, we utilize the power of soccer to galvanize our students by giving them the support and structure they need to realize their vast potential. In 2004, Luma Mufleh started a soccer team for refugee boys in Clarkston, GA. By 2006, the Fugees Family (taking their name from their identity as refugees) was founded with the mission of helping refugee youth rebuild their lives, one step at a time. Since then, Fugees Family has evolved into a group of programs and school sites focusing on the various needs of refugee and immigrant youth. These include the Georgia Fugees Academy Charter School (GFACS) and Teranga Academies, school district partner sites implementing the Fugees education model, as well as summer academic enrichment, after school tutoring and soccer, immigration legal assistance, and a Fugees Co-Op. Academic case management for all 340+ students, educator and staff professional development, and wrap around support services to families are included. As the population of refugee and immigrant youth in the U.S. is growing exponentially, and global conflict is on the rise, Fugees realized the need to expand our proven education model based in Comprehensive Student Development (CSD) nationwide. Our scale plan through our Teranga Academies includes partnering with 50 school districts with newcomer centers/ a high number of ELL students in the next 5 years and developing GFACS to include a complete innovation hub for educator training and support; re-working the education system and cultivating a national shift to bring equal educational opportunities and a sense of belonging to all refugee and immigrant students.
