Mission Statement
The Mission of the United Friends of Highgate is to contribute to the economical, physical, educational, environmental, cultural and social development of Highgate and to help the homeless in Broward County, South Florida.
About This Cause
United Friends of Highgate is an all-volunteer, 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization on a mission to help the less-fortunate in Highgate, Jamaica, where many of its members once lived. In 2018, because of the large assemblage of homeless people Broward County, South Florida and because Broward is home to its Florida Chapter members, the mission was extended to working with charitable organizations of similar policies and guidelines. The organization is made up of two chapters: a chapter in Highgate called the “Ground Zero” chapter and the founding chapter in Florida. The Ground Zero chapter is responsible for providing the Florida chapter with information regarding needs in Highgate and helping to mollify these needs. The Florida chapter works in coordination with the Ground Zero chapter to fund activities in furtherance of the mission. UFOH is a 100% non-political and non-religious organization. Nonetheless, its mission brings the organization in contact with both religious and government organizations. The United Friends of Highgate maintains a policy that dictates its non-political, non-religious procedures. Hence, the organization declares its policies and mission whenever required before any partnerships or processes with any organization. Therefore, UFOH is fully transparent and able to maintain its mission and policies. The organization has been acclaimed as a focused, committed and accomplished one by many leading South Florida officials as well as several Jamaican leaders such as the highest ranking official of Jamaica, His Excellency, The Most Honourable Sir Patrick L. Allen, Governor General. UFOH has partnered with Daybreak Assembly to aid the homeless in the form of clothing, food and information. Information regarding where to get shelter, food and other assistance has been a very valuable service to this group. Over the past thirteen years UFOH has aided the poor in Highgate by donating an Ambulance to the Health Center and hosting an annual health fair where over two hundred individuals receive medical assistance. The health center, infirmary and hospital also benefit from medicine and various types of medical equipment and furniture. Each year needy children receive assistance in the form of scholarships, books and other educational materials while the schools receive assistance in the form of computers as well as office and school supplies. The organization has provided one needy individual with a full four-year scholarship to the University of the West Indies and has plans to provide two more similar scholarships. UFOH provides fifty needy and very poor individuals with a US $25 food vouchers each, during the Christmas season. The organization has built a small house for a homeless individual who has lived and worked in Highgate all his life. In addition to promoting social activities, UFOH has partnered with a prominent Highgater to create the “United Friends of Highgate-Stanley Amritt Football Competition, which is a soccer competition between Junior High Schools in the area. All activates in Highgate is done in coordination with the United Friends of Highgate chapter in Highgate while all activities in Florida is done in partnership with charitable organizations that is experienced and capable of completing these tasks.
