Mission Statement
The Humane Society is a no-kill animal shelter that provides care and shelter for stray animals and pets no longer wanted by their owners, and placement services for animals into adoptive homes. Our mission statement is as follows: “We strive to be a passionate advocate for the lives of companion animals by finding quality homes, providing community education, and promoting responsible animal ownership.“
About This Cause
The Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo operates a no-kill animal shelter in Henry County, and serves the northern portion of the 823 square mile county. Animals are also taken in from Rock Island and Whiteside Counties, due to their proximity to the animal shelter. The Humane Society works in conjunction with the city of Geneseo by accepting all stray animals that have been held by the city after the required seven-day waiting period. The Humane Society also works with Henry County Animal Control in Cambridge to accept overflow of animals at their facility, and also accepts all felines from that agency, due to their lack of cages. When space is available, animals released by their owners due to a change in living conditions are also accepted, as well as from owner’s families when the owner has died. Waiting lists are maintained of animals whose owners are looking to release them, and the shelter manager attempts to pair up animals with new owners based on potential owner’s desires. The Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo adopted 219 pets in 2013. These are unwanted animals that may have otherwise been sent to kill shelters and euthanized. The Humane Society assures that all animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, have been tested for serious diseases, are current on all vaccinations, have been microchipped prior to adoption, and are cared for in a healthy and compassionate atmosphere during their stay at the shelter. The Society also screens potential adopters and monitors any resulting adoptions, offering a return of those animals to the shelter should the adoption prove unsuccessful. All activities are funded by donations. The Humane Society employs three part-time employees for cleaning of the animal shelter, and a shelter manager who works 40 hours per week. The Humane Society runs its operations from the Geneseo Animal Shelter, located at 14606 Roos Hill Road in Geneseo, Illinois. Advertised hours are 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm seven days a week, although special appointments are often made with potential adopters outside of the advertised hours. The shelter manager works a flexible schedule, and performs administrative duties as well as monitoring the health of the animals, taking animals to the veterinarian, recording data and managing records, and trapping feral cats for spaying/neutering. The Humane Society telephone number is posted on the door of the animal shelter, in the telephone book, and on our website in order that arrangements may be made for special appointments for those people who cannot visit during advertised hours. The shelter manager answers the Humane Society telephone 24 hours a day. She answers questions about adoptable pets that are posted to internet websites, providing information about the temperament and activity level of each animal. She provides information regarding low-cost spay and neuter clinics in the area, and fields questions from owners looking to find their lost pet, or to release their animals. A log book of incoming phone calls is kept, including information about pets that have been lost and found. This has resulted in a number of pets being reunited with their owners. The shelter is open 365 days a year to accommodate visitors. Volunteers staff open hours at the shelter not only to assist the public in the adoption of animals, but to walk dogs, tend to litter boxes, change animal bedding and food and water dishes, and socialize the animals. All adoptable animals are posted on the internet Petfinder.com, and just recently, AdoptaPet.com. These websites have assisted the Humane Society tremendously in increasing adoptions. The Humane Society assisted the community by providing veterinary care for sick and injured strays through donations by the public to the “Dutch Memorial Fund”. These funds were initially received in 2010 to cover the veterinarian bills for a stray cat that was tortured in rural Henry County, but the volume of donations has made it possible to continue caring for other strays. Donations are still being received for the fund, and a total of 43 animals have been helped through the fund. Animals that benefit from the fund are put up for adoption after they have fully recovered. The Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo believes that our service promotes the vision of a no-kill society. This brings the realization to people in the local area that unwanted animals are indeed wanted somewhere, and will be cared for until permanent homes are found. And by providing this service, it is hoped that people will seek out pets from the Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo when seeking to adopt a companion animal.
