Mission Statement

To champion system change in early education and youth education, to provide opportunity for children and families to reach their potential and thrive

About This Cause

Generation One [501(c)3] serves to champion strategic change in the education system, by creating an equitable educational landscape for children in low-income, high need communities. Focusing on children in Houston’s Third Ward, we are developing a holistic, research-based model that includes three inter-related programs: Generation One Academy, an early education laboratory school (ages 3-5 years); Next Gen, after-school and summer program that builds on academic and social-emotional-learning of Academy graduates (K-8th grade); and Empowered Families—social support and family programs including counseling, therapy, and case management for students and families with our full-time, licensed family therapist. Because our families do not have the financial resources to fund this high-quality education and surrounding services, we require families actively participate and contribute time and service to the school. Generation One addresses root causes of inequity in education and provides direct services to children and families. The effects of poverty and a detrimental environment create deficits in development for children, age zero to five years, which cause greater problems later in education and in life. Working with families and children, early in the lives of the children, we are creating opportunities for these children to learn, to grow, and to thrive.
