About This Cause
SCALEAfrica is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization designing and building green school infrastructure in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Through culturally-responsive, sustainable architecture and an active community participation model, SCALEAfrica leverages the power of design to increase access to education, boost local economies, and preserve the natural environment. WHAT WE BUILD • Classrooms • Libraries • Teacher Housing • Community Centers • Playgrounds • Sanitation Facilities HOW WE BUILD Beyond designing with passive strategies for increased natural lighting and healthy ventilation, we use sustainable techniques as a means to a very critical end. Each project trains and employs entirely local labor. All buildings are made by hand, without the use of power tools. Materials are local and renewable. We extract sand, rock, water from the site for these buildings, but more importantly we cultivate human potential - with parents, teachers and children participating. Better designed spaces encourage learning and community building, and that equates to supporting children in their pursuit of an education and a better future. WHY WE BUILD We believe access to education is a human right. Educating children, especially girls, is essential to an improved global future, not just because they have the untapped potential for increasing economic development, but because they end up driving real social change through altering perceptions, working within and for their communities and passing on the legacy of education, literacy and health to their children. If a student makes it past the 5th grade, their chance of moving out of poverty doubles. More well-designed classroom space means more kids in school means a future predicated on opportunity not circumstance. Children will grow to solve global problems, therefore we build schools to give them futures through the power of design.
