Mission Statement

To support war-affected communities, refugees, combatants, and former child soldiers in northern Uganda to help heal their war trauma, rebuild their lives, and reconcile through holistic, culturally appropriate, and locally designed projects.

About This Cause

When child soldiers come home or when refugees flee a camp, they face tremendous stigma and trauma. Our programs are designed to transform that situation. At GRG, we use a holistic, bottom-up approach to the community reintegration of ex-combatants and refugees. We work with groups of 20-30 people composed half of ex-combatants or refugees and half of other community members. We support groups to examine their own problems, and to come up with their own solutions. We have reached 2,623 former child soldiers, refugees, and host communities in total. GRG’s philosophy is to work with groups that are made up of half former combatants or refugees and half community members. By encouraging war victims and perpetrators to work hand-in-hand for the sake of shared goals, our activities rebuild relationships and trust within the war-torn communities. GRG uses a bottom-up approach by encouraging the two groups to work together to design culturally-appropriate projects and take the lead on its sustainability, as GRG facilitates the implementation. We have five main types of projects: - Livelihoods - Trauma counseling - Community microfinance - Reconciliation - Cultural activities
