Mission Statement

The Joan Ganz Cooney Center is an independent research and innovation lab within Sesame Workshop that advances positive futures for kids in our digital world. We conduct research on emerging technologies and collaborate with technologists, digital media producers, and educators to put this research into action to support young people’s learning and well-being. We facilitate an international network of researchers and partner directly with young people, elevating their diverse voices to ensure that digital media experiences benefit kids broadly. We also work with policy makers and investors to drive national conversations and decisions that help youth thrive.

About This Cause

Since our founding in 2007, the Cooney Center’s research has inspired innovations, served as a “north star” for developers and educators, and helped shape the research and policy fields. Our initiatives build upon our history of field-building research and deepen our efforts to engage children and young people directly in shaping our digital world and their futures. Our priorities and initiatives include: (1) Enable innovators to design with and for kids. The Cooney Center leverages child-centered design practices to help industry partners build better digital media products. Our Learning Lab initiative bridges the divide among what kids want and need in digital products, what innovators seek to develop, and what researchers know is beneficial. In the Learning Lab, we engage young people, including from systematically under-represented backgrounds, as design partners who shape the products made for them. (2) Support youth voice and participation through media in the public interest. Working with young people from diverse backgrounds, the Cooney Center is uncovering valuable insights on their digital media use and translating findings to engage tween and teen audiences. We support media innovation, shared learning, and collaboration across the public media system and the digital platforms young people use every day. (3) Promote children’s well-being in digital spaces. The Cooney Center is engaging partners globally in the adoption of digital well-being policies and practices by collaborating on the development of research-based definitions and indicators, practical resources, and accessible tools. Our work includes a global initiative with UNICEF and The LEGO Group to activate industry partners and policy makers, and a partnership with the Fair Play Alliance and IDEO that focuses on building healthy interactions and resilient communities in online game spaces.
