Mission Statement

Harnessing the power of bikes to help youth build passion, purpose, and a place in the community.

About This Cause

We are the only bike repair training organization for youth in the Northern Virginia area. Our free, hands-on instruction teaches local 6th-12th grade students to build and repair used bikes, provides them exposure to retail work in our full-service bike shop, and empowers them with the skills and confidence to take into their futures—all while making bikes more accessible to our community. Our core programs are as follows: Earn-A-Bike: This foundational program teaches youth the basics of bike mechanics, enables students to practice their skills by fixing up a bike to give to a community member in need, and then provides them with the chance to refurbish a bike to keep for themselves. On average, the program takes each student 20-25 hours of sweat equity, and we celebrate with them when they earn their own “wheels”! Job Readiness Skills: For Earn-a-Bike graduates who want to build on their mechanics skills and increase their chances of getting hired at local bike shops, we offer an “Advanced Mechanics” curriculum that teaches skills such as replacing spokes and working with disc brakes. We also provide opportunities for students to teach other students, participate in community service activities, and work on practical skills such as customer service to build their real-world work experience and confidence. Youth Rides and Races: We organize guided weekly group rides so youth can become familiar with local routes and practice their riding and mechanical repair skills. We offer 1-2 overnight bike camping trips per year to introduce students to longer rides and bike touring equipment. Lastly, through our junior race team, students can learn teamwork and challenge themselves physically by trying out road racing, mountain bike racing and cyclocross racing. By covering the costs of race licenses, entries, and uniforms, we help youth experience a sport they otherwise may not have the opportunity to enjoy. Community Services: Our bike shop is not only a learning environment for our students; it is also a way we give back to the broader community. We provide below-market repair services, sell affordable refurbished bikes, and donate bikes to community members in need to ensure that our neighbors—regardless of income level—are able to start and keep riding.
