About This Cause
Fa Yun Chan Temple, located at the intersection of Chinatown in Oakland, Northern California, had its humble beginnings. In 2006, Venerable Master Xin Xin leased a commercial space of approximately 1,300 square feet, marking the commencement of its mission to propagate Buddhism in California. In March 2007, after receiving government approval, it officially became a legal religious venue. Despite the initial simplicity and lack of basic facilities such as a dining hall, kitchen, and housing, Venerable Master Xin Xin, guided by the practice philosophy inherited from his mentor, Venerable Master Fa Yun, fearlessly persevered and diligently promoted the Dharma. With her meticulous and dedicated approach, the Master gained the trust and support of a large local following within just two years. In November 2009, the Master acquired a two-story building located at 512 8th St., Oakland, CA 94607, establishing a permanent Dharma center for Fa Yun Chan Temple. Through careful design and thorough renovation, the once simple and disorderly warehouse transformed into an elegant and solemn sanctuary. Outside the main entrance on the first floor, intricately carved stone walls adorned with delicate Buddha wheels and scriptures welcome visitors. Inside the main hall, the carved rosewood statues of the Three Saints exude the compassionate and dignified presence of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The walls are adorned with a thousand sandalwood-carved statues of Avalokiteshvara, vividly lifelike and serene. The entire hall is permeated with the pure fragrance of the Dharma, bringing joy to all who witness, making it a true Dharma center for local devout practitioners. Driven by the compassionate wish to benefit sentient beings and in response to the learning and practice needs of the faithful, Fa Yun Chan Temple conducts communal Dharma sessions and lectures every Saturday, providing a space for the community to gather, immerse in Buddhist teachings, and explore the profound meanings of the Dharma. Additionally, the temple organizes an annual summer retreat, spanning three months, where participants engage in collective practice and study of scriptures. Furthermore, on Buddha and Bodhisattva birthdays, traditional cultural festivals, Vesak, Buddha's Joyous Day, Qingming Ancestral Worship, and more, the temple hosts special ceremonies, allowing the broader community to receive the blessings of the Dharma. In keeping with Chinese cultural traditions of filial piety, the temple also offers compassionate support and chanting services for the departed, aiding descendants in fulfilling their filial duties and passing on virtuous values in their final journey.
