About This Cause

The Connection for Women and Families, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, has been serving individuals in Union, Morris and Essex Counties for nearly 90 years through a variety of programs. From its beginnings when it rented rooms to young working women during the 1920's, The Connection has a long history of serving the needs of women and children. Today, The Connection serves over 5,000 women, men and children through a variety of programs and activities. The Connection is well known for its excellent aquatics, fitness and child care programs. Classes are offered for all ages, and are filled with girls and boys as young as six months to senior citizens in their nineties. Within both the aquatics and fitness programs there are classes for those with special needs, many of which are not available elsewhere. The Connection’s commitment to community service programs is particularly outstanding. By serving newcomers to our country, physical rehabilitative patients, and physically and mentally challenged youth and adults, The Connection meets the needs of many different constituencies not reached by other agencies. The Connection has a rich tradition of providing much needed community service programs such as: • After School Enrichment Program- 240 students in grades K-5 receive after school care at The Connection and in the Summit schools. In collaboration with the Board of Education, the in-school programs provide students with enriched care, homework assistance and family support. In addition to head teachers and aides at each site, the program is staffed by a Social Service Coordinator who provides support to families and plans activities to engage both students and parents in the program. Additionally, the program features strong mentoring and tutoring components, with 40% of the families receiving financial assistance. • English as Second Language- 80 students from 20 counties receive language instruction and valuable support services including assistance with citizenship exams, job and school applications. Over 75% of the students receive financial assistance. Beginning in September of 2014, we will be collaborating with the Summit Public Library to offer additional classes in their facility. • Pathways – 500 women with breast and gynecological cancers receive support through educational workshops, wellness programs, support groups, and community outreach including the patient education program. The Pathways Cooks Program provides freshly-prepared, nutrient rich, organic meals free of charge in order to support women who are in treatment and their loved ones. Pathways Cooks removes the burden of meal planning and preparation so that families can focus on healing and recovery. More than 3,800 meals have been prepared and delivered to date by Pathways volunteers. • Special Needs Programs- 200 children and adults with special needs participate each week in recreational and social programs including NJ Special Olympics, adaptive aquatics and fitness, Teen Club, Special Needs Sports and monthly dances for adults with special needs. • Scholarship Program- The Connection provided $270,000 of financial assistance to over 500 individuals in our programs this year. Our Scholarship Fund enables us to offer our programs and service to all individuals, regardless of their economic circumstance. Mission Statement: The Connection for Women and Families is a non-profit, women-led organization dedicated to enhancing lives and fostering community.
