Mission Statement
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is to enable all Newark's youth, especially those who need us most, to become caring, productive, and responsible citizens. BGCN exists to provide youth with an outcome-driven Club experience, that leads to three priority outcomes: Academic Success: Graduate high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment. Good Character & Citizenship: Become engaged citizens involved in the community, register to vote, and model strong character. Healthy Lifestyles: Adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and make a lifelong commitment to fitness.
About This Cause
The Boys and Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is a non-profit focused on the development of youth and families in greater Newark, of which a portion of the population is low-income and underserved. For more than 80 years, BGCN has served Newark families through the incorporation of youth-centered afterschool programs. To carry out our primary mission, we serve approximately 1,000 youth throughout Newark and surrounding communities. During the school year, BGCN serves 600+ youth, with approximately 270 of them enrolled at our 33,000 square foot Clubhouse facility located in the heart of Newark’s Central Ward. The Clubhouse is equipped with a swimming pool, gymnasium, full-service kitchen, games room, Teen and Tween Centers, three classrooms, and a STEM Center. BGCN partners with KIPP, a network of public charter schools, to reach more kids in the city of Newark. 330+ of our active members participated in daily BGCN programming at KIPP schools prior to the pandemic, with a percentage to return to each of the school sites this upcoming school year. We provide a summer camp for 300+ children from July to August, implementing a variety of programs aimed at preventing or reducing summer learning loss. BGCN has since shifted in recent years from the traditional after-school framework mainly focusing on homework assistance and recreation that fits the needs of the youth and families of the community in adherence to our national branch, the Boys & Girls Club of America. This has led to improvements that have positively affected our program and service delivery. BGCN continues to provide opportunities for at-risk youth in an urban environment to develop the skills necessary to achieve success in society on their own terms. Through targeted, evidence-based programs, under the supervision of caring and trained staff, BGCN ensures youth are able to reach three priority outcomes: Academic Success: Graduate from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment. Good Character and Citizenship: Be an engaged citizen involved in the community, register to vote and model strong character. Healthy Lifestyles: Adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and make a lifelong commitment to fitness.
