BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF HUDSON COUNTY

Jersey City, New Jersey, 07302 United States

Mission Statement

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County has been in the forefront of youth development for over 125 years. We are dedicated to enabling all young people – especially those who need us most – to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens of the communities that we serve. Operating in Jersey City since 1893 and in Hoboken since 1984, we serve thousands of youth, ages 5-21, each year in our sites. We offer comprehensive and quality programming in three major age groups: Rising STARs (Science, Technology, Art and Reading for Kindergarten-3rd Grade), Middle School Program (4th-8th Grades), Teen Programs (High School). Our philosophy is simple; by providing services to children at an early age and giving them encouragement and positive experiences, we offer a compelling alternative to youth crime, gang membership, drugs, and other negative influences that effect our youth today. We give them the guidance they need to be successful adults and give back to their community.

About This Cause

Since 1893, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County has remained a resource and pathway to success for generations of Jersey City’s and Hoboken’s young people and has grown into the largest youth-serving agency in the county. Our Club members face problems characteristic of low-income, inner-city communities, including crime, gang activity, poverty, and crowded schools. In such dire circumstances, youth have few, if any, other opportunities for recreation or enrichment programs – making the Boys & Girls Club work vitally important. Many of the members join at five years old, grow up in the Clubhouses, and stay active and engaged through high school graduation, and beyond. Today we serve more than 2,500 youth ages 5-21 annually in our Clubhouses in Jersey City and Hoboken, through our mission to enable all young people – especially those who need us most – to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens of the communities that we serve. From Power Hour for homework assistance and tutoring to teen workforce development, from SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood, from UPS Road Code to computer coding, from AAU basketball to music production, from Robotics to character development, from Triple Play and Healthy Habits to Keystone (leadership and community service club for teens); the Boys & Girls Club has something to engage every young person. In recent years, the Club has made organizational advancements that set it apart from other Clubs and local nonprofits and, more importantly, enhance its impact on the young people it serves. • Opened a new Clubhouse: It is approximately 34,000 square feet of classroom and recreational space, including modern science and technology labs, visual and performing arts studios, a learning kitchen, and a multi-use gymnasium. The building was designed to drastically reduce operating costs with solar panels, decrease need for maintenance and repair, improve services with greater technology capabilities, utilize space more efficiently so that we may offer expanded programs, and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for our members. • Launched a Teen Tech Center: The Center features computer labs and arts studios with tools for music and video production, interactive programming, digital photography, graphic design, robotics, and more.It is overseen by a team of leading professionals from various technology fields. In addition, BGCHC is providing college and workforce development, including placing youth in paid summer internships. • Sustained and expanded programs: The Boys & Girls Club has maintained services at two sites for over 2,200 youth. BGCHC has expanded services to two struggling schools in Jersey City through Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center funding. Services have also been expanded to open afterschool sites in 5 Jersey City Housing Authority residential locations. BGCHC has launched new programming based upon the needs of those it serves. STEM services have expanded to supplement students’ in-school learning by offering additional time to explore STEM disciplines and the opportunity to diversify the ways that they experience STEM. BGCHC has also received funding to expand workforce development programs to serve more teens. BGCHC has been providing outreach services to the most needy and vulnerable youth in the community since 1984. It pioneered counseling and education services to improve academic achievement long before any other youth-serving agencies in Jersey City addressed these issues and currently have specialized initiatives for at-risk youth and teen gang prevention services. Not only is there an organizational commitment to education, but BGCHC has a track of record of success in its efforts to effect positive changes in youth. For the past three years, 100% of its active high school members have graduated on time and 98% have enrolled in post-secondary education programs (approximately 125 active teens). BGCHC has also designed and implemented literacy programs for all ages, beginning in kindergarten. The literacy programs include a high school literacy mentoring component, Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Project Learn, and Summer Brain Gain, designed to combat summer learning loss. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County created the innovative Academic Sports League program which provides opportunities for youth to score points in three ways: behavioral, by bringing in behavioral incentive point cards given by their teachers; educationally, by participating in conflict resolution and SEL activities, and finally athletically, by scoring points during the game. Teachers receive League schedules and point card pads. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County has been operating Academic Leagues for over 15 years and have included basketball and flag football. The point card system has been instrumental in improving homework completion, school behavior, and academic achievement. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County provides kids and teens: ▪ Safe, positive, and inclusive environments to learn and grow. ▪ Opportunities to build positive, meaningful and healthy connections with their peers and adults. ▪ High-quality strength-based activities and programs to explore and obtain skills necessary to make good decisions. ▪ Experiences that foster hope, belonging and a sense of purpose. ▪ Opportunities for youth to lead, contribute their ideas, and be recognized. Our goal is to provide an exceptional Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
