About This Cause

Safe+Sound Somerset is the only private, non-profit agency in Somerset County, New Jersey providing comprehensive services to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and their families. Our trauma-informed, evidence based programs are designed to support and empower victims and their families. Established in 1978, S+SS has continually expanded to now offer a comprehensive range of services designed to support and empower survivors on their path to safety, hope and healing. Our services include: a 24-hour toll-free Crisis Hotline, Emergency Safe House, Legal Advocacy, Individual and Group Counseling for adult and child survivors of domestic abuse and adult survivors of sexual abuse, Financial Empowerment Center, Housing First, referrals for local batterers’ treatment services, and Community Outreach and Prevention, including training for allied professionals. Most survivors come to S+SS experiencing the trauma of domestic abuse. Our newest clinical services, Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Trauma- Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) established in 2017 and 2016, are evidence-based therapies designed to address Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) of adult and child survivors, respectively, recovering from trauma resulting from their experiences with domestic abuse. At completion, free of PTSD, survivors exhibit better decision making, are more present in their lives, and make and carry through plans for their future. Other programs of Safe+Sound Somerset include Outreach and Community Education. The universal goal of Community Outreach and Prevention is to empower clients to feel comfortable making decisions and taking action to increase their safety and reduce the risk of future harm to themselves and their children. Staff provides accurate information, appropriate referrals, and emotional support to survivors seeking non- residential services. The Community Education program informs and educates about domestic abuse and the services available to those whose lives are impacted. Our educational programs are offered to both professional and community groups. Additionally, two 60-hour trainings are provided annually to volunteers who will have direct contact with our clients. This includes members of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT), which provides immediate response to survivors of domestic abuse who have been brought to local police stations. The organization also utilizes volunteers in several service components, such as answering the hotline, food shopping for the Safe House, transporting clients to appointments, and providing information at the Superior Court prior to restraining order hearings. All of our programs are free of charge, confidential, offered in multiple locations throughout the county, and are available in English and Spanish. Clients with additional language needs are assisted by the AT&T Language Line or volunteer translation assistance Hotline services.
