Mission Statement
The mission of CONTACT of Mercer County, New Jersey, is to provide free compassionate and confidential emotional support, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention services to the community as well as to reduce the stigma of mental illness through training and education.
About This Cause
CONTACT of Mercer County, New Jersey responds to NJ 988 Calls, Chats and Texts from the public. Since July 2022, 988 Centers are available nationwide to help people in emotional distress and suicidal crisis. Our free and confidential Hotlines save the lives of people who call, chat or text about their personal emotional health. CONTACT increases emotional wellness for the community at large. For many people a call to a caring anonymous person decreases loneliness and brings connection, very important factors in mental and emotional wellbeing. CONTACT of Mercer County, NJ’s programs reduce stigma about mental health and suicidality through education of volunteers including college students and the general public from Mercer County and local colleges such as Princeton University, The College of NJ, RIDER University, Rutgers University, and Mercer County Community College. All volunteers are required to successfully complete CONTACT’S 35 hour training course prior to taking on active volunteer work in CONTACT Hotline Programs. CONTACT Volunteers and staff have opportunities for additional training: MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) and ASIST Training on suicide prevention and building suicide safer communities. Both MHFA and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) are SAMHSA best practice and attendees receive national certificates. HOTLINE training courses for the public are offered in the spring and fall. The focus of the training is on developing Active Listening Skills, increasing knowledge of mental health issues and suicide prevention skills. Attendees report that this training helps them in their personal lives and interactions with others. CONTACT’s Telephone Reassurance Program consists of regularly scheduled phone calls, usually daily, to seniors living alone in Mercer County. Trained Volunteers call specific people over the age of 60 who live alone in Mercer County, NJ on a prearranged basis. This short call provides a safety assessment and telephone visit, which reduces loneliness and isolation for the senior adult. There is no charge for Telephone Reassurance which is funded in part through a grant from the Mercer County Office on Aging, from the Older Americans Act of 1965 as amended.
