Mission Statement

The Lake Champlain Committee is dedicated to protecting Lake Champlain’s environmental integrity and recreational resources for this and future generations through science-based advocacy, education and collaborative action.

About This Cause

The Lake Champlain Committee (LCC) is the only bi-state organization solely dedicated to protecting Lake Champlain’s health and accessibility. We use science-based advocacy, education and collaborative action to protect and restore water quality, safeguard natural habitats and ensure recreational access. We are also the home organization for the Lake Champlain Paddlers’ Trail, providing a safe, recreational corridor for human-powered craft on the lake. LCC was founded in 1963 by New York and Vermont citizens to prevent the lake from becoming an international commercial seaway for oceangoing vessels. Since then we have played a role in every major lake issue, from preventing a nuclear power plant on the Charlotte, Vermont shore to developing an international water quality agreement to reduce nutrient pollution. Throughout our history we have based our positions on sound science, provided a whole-lake perspective on issues, and helped craft solutions to water quality problems. With the support of our 2,500 members and online activists, LCC works to address the most pressing environmental issues facing the lake - phosphorus pollution, invasive species, toxic pollution - and to ensure access to this wonderful public resource.
