Mission Statement
Father Bill’s & MainSpring (FBMS) is committed to ending and preventing homelessness in Southern Massachusetts with programs that provide emergency and permanent housing and help people obtain skills, jobs, housing, and services. We help people who are struggling with homelessness or are at risk of homelessness to achieve self-sufficiency.
About This Cause
Father Bill’s & MainSpring (FBMS) was formed when two nonprofits merged in 2007. MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless of Brockton (f. 1982) and Father Bill’s Place of Quincy (f. 1984) combined strengths and gained the capacity to respond regionally to the work of ending homelessness. Today, FBMS is leading innovations to end and prevent homelessness in the South Shore and Southeastern Massachusetts, with programs that shelter and reconnect people to housing, jobs and services. We help over 6,400 people each year who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to gain self-sufficiency. Committed to the fundamental belief that "nobody should be homeless,” FBMS seeks to end the cycle of homelessness by converting many of our shelter beds to long-term housing options and by addressing the root causes of homelessness with individualized support services. With decades of experience, we have worked diligently over the past number of years to recalibrate our approach to addressing homelessness from a reactive response (emergency shelter) to a preemptive and equitable response through Housing First and the development of permanent supportive housing and, more recently, the adoption of the housing resource center model of care. This model is focused on assessing guests’ needs upon arrival at emergency shelter, providing access to a variety of resources to meet those needs, and fast-tracking them into permanent housing and appropriate systems of care with targeted wraparound support. This not only leads to better outcomes for guests but also results in cost savings for the Agency and the communities we serve, as fewer guests require costly emergency shelter, medical, and public safety services. FBMS core programs include Prevention/Diversion, Triage/Emergency Shelter, and Housing. We have developed two new facilities to optimize our service delivery - the Yawkey Housing Resource Center (HRC) in Brockton and the Smith Family Housing Resource Center in Brockton. FBMS HRCs are service hubs where case managers work with guests to access services including healthcare at our on- site clinics, housing and employment opportunities, referrals for services like mental healthcare and substance use treatment, connections to insurance and income building benefits, emergency assistance funding, and more. We provide over 2,500 people/year with shelter and services, including over 230 families, and serve 263,500+ meals to guests struggling with food insecurity. Our prevention programs help people avoid eviction or displacement and remain housed. FBMS is one of a few sheltering organizations in the region that also develops permanent supportive housing, with over 800+ units. In FY24, 99% of participants remained housed for 12+ months. We continue to create new housing in pursuit of our strategic goal of creating 20-50 new units per year to meet demand.
