Mission Statement
Featured in the 2005 hit documentary, "Mad Hot Ballroom", Dancing Classrooms cultivates essential life stills in children through the joyful art and practice of social dance. Our vision uses ballroom dance as the medium to promote schools and communities where every child is connected, respected and given an environment in which to thrive.
About This Cause
Through our core, 20-session in-school residency, in over 150 mostly under-resourced NYC schools, we engage more than 20,000 students in grades 4 through 8 each year. Our students learn a lifetime of lessons while being introduced to social line dances and social ballroom and latin partner dances. • To learn through play and to have fun learning...to be treated with respect, and treat others the same. • To stand tall with poise, in dance or escort position...to leave their comfort zone, take a chance, be reflective. • To express themselves in movement, attitude, and gesture, in conversation and writing... to be a true partner, attuned and responsive. • To rely on and be relied upon... ...to help others, and let others help them The maturity necessary to dance together foster respect, teamwork, confidence and a sense of joy and accomplishment, which we hope to bring to every child. Ballroom dance is the medium we use to nurture these qualities.
