Mission Statement

A community-funded, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, Pope Memorial Humane Society – Cocheco Valley (PMHS-CV) is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care and shelter for animals while fostering a more humane community through education and advocacy for animal welfare. PMHS-CV cares for over 1,000 animals each year, who enter our doors as strays, owner surrenders, or transports from other humane agencies in need of assistance. We also provide low-cost veterinary care to hundreds of owned pets every year to ensure owned animals can continue to thrive with their beloved families.

About This Cause

Pope Memorial Humane Society – Cocheco Valley (PMHS-CV), located in the Strafford County Complex in Dover, New Hampshire, was established in 1984 as Cocheco Valley Humane Society to serve the domestic animal welfare needs of the more than 125,000 residents of Strafford County, NH. We also provide service to New Hampshire and southern Maine residents who, while living outside our general service area, need and seek our assistance. We provide shelter to more than 1,000 animals per year with additional services to thousands more. Previously housed in a 100-year-old piggery that was once part of the county work farm, PMHS does not receive funding from the State of New Hampshire or the federal government. PMHS-CV relies solely on community support.
