The Second Step helps survivors of domestic violence heal and thrive in safe and supportive communities.
About This Cause
The Second Step provides free, trauma-informed domestic violence services, including safety planning, legal services, counseling, housing stabilization, support groups, community education, and other essential services throughout Greater Boston. Our experienced attorneys, advocates, and educators provide customized specialty services that help put survivors on the path toward safety, stability, healing, and hope. Annually, we serve over 400 families, empowering survivors with tools, skills, support, and confidence to remove obstacles to independence, rebuild their lives, and achieve long-term stability. While domestic violence impacts people of all backgrounds, approximately 90% of our clients are women, 72% are low-income, and 58% are people of color. Programs include: Legal Services Our staff attorneys provide expert legal services for issues stemming from domestic violence, including Full Representation, Limited Assistance Representation, advice and consultation on matters including Abuse Prevention Orders, Family Law, Immigration and Housing. Transitional Living Program We provide a continuum of services aimed at securing safe, permanent housing for survivors. We operate a transitional living program, housing up to 9 families at any given time. Clients come to us from the instability of short-term emergency shelters, and receive comprehensive services including financial and housing advocacy, educational and support groups, and life-skills building to regain independence in the aftermath of abuse. We also help survivors find and maintain permanent housing and provide supportive services to ensure successful transitions. Prevention, Intervention, and Education We provide extensive services to survivors in the community to build skills, develop resilience, heal from trauma, and thrive. We work with survivors on critical safety planning - to access safety, plan for future crises, identify available options, and make safe decisions. We connect survivors to resources to help them meet basic needs and reach their goals- including educational, financial, career, health and overall well-being. We advocate for survivors navigating complex systems, and we provide emotional support to address the trauma of abuse. We also provide outreach and education through workshops and presentations in the community, including topics such as healthy/unhealthy relationships, warnings signs of abuse, bystander intervention, and how to help peers, friends and family members who are in violent and abusive relationships.
