As towns continue to grow and precious habitat is disturbed wild animal and human encounters increase and so does the demand for our services.Woodlands remains committed to continue to grow to meet the needs of both the human and wild communities.
About This Cause
Woodlands was established in 1986 with the care of two orphaned raccoons, and now cares for almost 2000 animals each year from the smallest to the largest mammal or reptile, and the tiniest orphan to the most critically injured adult. Woodlands is a 501c3 charity that receives no state or federal funding and relies solely on the generosity of others. A team of 5 staff members and 50 volunteers and interns give care to the animals 365 days a year/ 7 days a week. Our wild patients may require specialized diets, costly surgical procedures, medications, and long term care which puts a strain on our carefully managed resources. Woodlands works with all native mammal and reptile species and is the only rehabilitation facility in New Jersey licensed to work with black bears and the state endangered bobcat. During its many years in operation, more than 22,000 animals have been cared for including 88 black bears and 36 bobcats, as well as turtles, snakes, otters, beavers, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, skunks, opossums, fox, and mink to name a few! Our goal is to release these animals back to their natural habitat as well functioning wild animals.Woodlands’ Black Bear Rehabilitation Program is recognized internationally for its success. As precious wildlife habitat continues to be impacted, human and wildlife encounters are on the rise and Woodlands experiences an increased demand for its services. Ninety nine percent of the animals come to Woodlands as a result of human activities – cars, construction, pets, pesticides, and herbicides are some common causes. Woodlands is dedicated to continued growth to meet the needs of both the wild and human communities by not turning away animals or people in need of our services.
