About This Cause
Founded in 1989, the Portland Porpoise Swim Club (PPSC) is a USA Swimming accredited, competitive swim program for kids ages 5 and up. The ultimate goal of PPSC is to promote swimming and to encourage swimmers to be successful at their highest level of ability. It is our vision to create strong swimmers as well as outstanding and responsible citizens. Porpoise swimmers learn not only teamwork and sportsmanship, but they also gain a strong work ethic, discipline, self-motivation and self-esteem. At PPSC our goals are to: - Foster a life-long love of swimming through hard work balanced within a fun and motivating atmosphere - Draw member swimmers from all facets of the community - Promote good health by encouraging behaviors that build body, mind and spirit - Provide a safe, healthy and positive environment - Propel motivated and capable swimmers to new levels of achievement - Encourage swimmers to be successful at high school, collegiate, state, regional, national, and international levels We accomplish this by: - Employing highly skilled coaches who are enthusiastic about sharing their passion for swimming and teaching proper technique - Educating parents about the sport of swimming and how volunteering plays an important part in the success of the club - Relating to the community the values of competitive swimming - Promoting team unity, character development and family support where every swimmer has the opportunity to achieve their potential and compete at their highest level - Fostering a team culture that supports, mentors and encourages each other with genuine enthusiasm, and approach any competitive outcome with humility, grace and good sportsmanship - Collaborating with local and national accrediting bodies such as Maine Swimming Inc., USA Swimming, and the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) We aim to provide the most extensive competitive programming in the area. Over the last 10 years, 65% of graduating Porpoises went on to swim in college, many on athletic and academic scholarships. Three-time Olympian and five-time medalist Ian Crocker grew up swimming with the Porpoises and still holds numerous PPSC, Maine Swimming and World Championship records.
