Mission Statement

The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project helps low income immigrants improve their legal status and works for more just and humane laws and policies affecting immigrants.

About This Cause

ILAP is committed to advancing justice and equity for immigrants through direct legal services, community outreach, and systemic advocacy. As Maine’s only state-wide immigration legal services organization, we help Maine's immigrant communities navigate the current complex and unjust immigration laws while advocating for a better immigration system for the future. We have full-time offices in Portland and Lewiston and work state-wide through our Rural Maine Project, reaching over 3,000 people each year. Our program areas include: DIRECT LEGAL SERVICES ILAP provides a full range of free immigration legal services to meet the needs of Maine’s diverse immigrant communities. This includes full representation for the most complex cases, assistance navigating complicated immigration applications and forms, and consultations and limited representation for other issues. Across these services, our priorities and areas of expertise are asylum, detention & removal defense, family reunification, permanent residency & citizenship, relief for immigrant children and youth, relief for survivors, and other forms of humanitarian relief. EDUCATION & OUTREACH ILAP offers accurate, accessible and timely information in many languages on legal issues to immigrant communities and service providers across the state. Through virtual and in-person workshops, multilingual online resources, social media, and more, we help Maine’s immigrant communities understand the impact of new laws and policies and help the broader community make sense of immigration news. SYSTEMIC ADVOCACY ILAP works with local and national partners on important advocacy at the local, state and federal levels to improve laws and policies affecting immigrants in Maine. We believe that our communities are stronger, healthier, and more resilience when we have thoughtful, compassionate, and fair immigration laws.
