Mission Statement

Providing pregnant women in crises the safe space to make a pressure free decision to continue or terminate their pregnancy. We support women during pregnancy and for years after giving birth so that they can bring their children to the world with dignity and calm.

About This Cause

Surprisingly, many abortions in Israel are performed due to financial difficulties. This disturbing fact is the foundation of Dr. Schussheim’s rallying cry: “You don’t end a life because of money!” Depending on the individual situation, EFRAT will provide all that is needed to help overcome the economic difficulty and thus prevent the unnecessary termination of pregnancy. Efrat guides women and families and helps them attain emotional support, as well as practical assistance. The latter amounts to a complete package to cover all of baby’s needs: a bed, stroller, bathtub, infant seat, layette, etc. as well as a monthly delivery that includes formula, diapers, and other supplies for the child’s first two years. Women considering abortion are in a delicate, stressful, and often complex situation, Efrat supports them in the most loving and effective way to assure the continuous life of the fetus and save them from aborting their own child. Many of these women may want to keep their baby but feel they cannot sustain the baby alone. They are worried and desperate. In addition to the economic assistance, EFRAT offers emotional support, to ensure that no woman feels alone in her struggle, and to enable her to achieve emotional well-being and resilience she most desperately needs. To this end, EFRAT has a team of over 150 trained volunteers, many of whom have themselves considered abortion but ended up keeping their baby with the help of EFRAT. These volunteers are enthusiastic about helping other women and continue to be an active presence in the women’s lives for as long as necessary. Since 1977, EFRAT has directly supported over 89,000 women and helped them save their babies in Israel. Through the education arm of EFRAT successfully started changing the tide of abortions in Israel. EFRAT has become the address for helping women in these challenging circumstances. Today Efrat serves around 3,000 women each year, but the work is far from over. In Israel while the abortion rate is down, there are still over 30,000 abortions performed annually. The name was chosen to connect to the brave and life saving work of Miryam the sister of Moshe Rabienu. Our sages gave Miryam the name Efrat signifying and commending her that because of her bravery the people of Israel in Miztrayim were fruitful and multiplied. Miryam was the midwife who gave hope to a Jewish future by convincing her father to re-marry her mother so that others would follow and continue building families despite the decree of Pharo. She then served as a midwife providing encouragement and support during pregnancy and birth when the women faced the greatest fear of losing their children to the death claw of Pharo. Miryam (Efrat) did not stop there but continued to support the babies and mothers well after they were born as we know from the case of Moshe Rabienu. The name CRIB is an acronym for the Committee for the Rescue of Israel’s Babies. This name was inspired by Efrat supporters who felt that Efrat was needed to help replenish and rebuild the Jewish future after the terrible destruction of the holocaust. Efrat highlights: *49+ years serving pregnant women in Israel. * Directly assisted over 89,287 women to date. Over 3,000 each year. * All the women who were helped kept the babies that were born and continue to raise them. * A warehouse in Jerusalem operated primarily by volunteers sends out over 3,500 packages each month to women and their families from Metula to Eilat. * The annual budget of Efrat is in the range of $4M and the average cost of helping each woman is $1,500. * Over 150 trained women volunteers provide ongoing support to women across the country. * Publicity is carried out on bus campaigns, street signs, and whenever possible radio and TV media. * Not political. Only 2 requests have been made by Efrat in the public discussion of abortion: Allow each woman considering abortion to meet a social worker to hear her out and explain to her the risks and organizations available to assist. Require a 72 hour cooling off period from the moment the woman met an abortion Dr. to the time of the abortion. * Public support from the leading rabbinic community including:  All the chief Rabbis of Israel over the past 45 years including – the late Harav Ovadia Yosef Zt”l, Harav Mordechai Eliyahu Zt”l and YB”L Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau Shlit”a who were all very outspoken supporters of Efrat.  The leading Charedi Rabbis including – the late Rabbi Elyashiv Zt”l, Harav Chaim Kanievsky Zt”l, Harav Aryeh Levin Zt”l, and YB”L Harav Yitzchak Zilbershtien Shlit”a, Harav Asher Weiss Shlit”a, and many others.  The leading Chasidic Rabbis including – the late Rebbe of Gur Zt”l (who never endorsed an organization outside of the Chassidut), the late Rebbe of Chabad Zt”l, and YB”L many of the leading acting Rebbe’s today.
