Mission Statement

YCS has been caring for NJ's most vulnerable populations since 1918. Whether a child has suffered at the hands of abuse or neglect or has special needs not being met, YCS offers hope for a promising future. YCS group homes for children and adults with developmental disabilities provide safe, loving care to meet the clinical and health needs of those in our care. Our schools and day programs provide focused attention to meet each person's individualized needs. YCS also offers in-home care and mental health clinics to serve those in need right in their own communities. Our growing scope of YCS Sawtelle services are designed to address the needs of children and young adults on the autism spectrum, particularly serving the most severe and complex cases.

About This Cause

Founded in 1918 as a home for orphans and widows in the wake of World War I, YCS is the largest private non-profit mental health and social service agency for children in New Jersey – healing hearts and renewing hope for over 4,400 children each year. The Mission of YCS is to partner with at-risk and special needs children and young adults to build happier, healthier, more hopeful lives within families and communities. This mission is at work each day through more than 90 programs located across the State of New Jersey, helping to make a real difference in the lives of children who have suffered at the hands of abuse and neglect, face developmental challenges or have other special needs not being met. YCS programs fall into three general categories: residential safe havens and group homes, special education schools, and in-home & community-based services. YCS residential programs include group homes, shelters and foster care. These programs offer a wide range of therapeutic settings and services. For example, some programs focus on helping young children heal following a psychiatric hospitalization, others focus on guiding older children into independent living, and there are many more. YCS also offers specialized residences for dually-diagnosed teens and young adults with both developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges. YCS maintains its own special education schools, for children from YCS and from the community, where patient and attentive adults provide the techniques and personal attention to help overcome the cognitive damage that may be the result of abuse as well as developmental delay. YCS has two K-8 schools and two high schools that serve YCS children and children from communities where the local school districts cannot provide the level of service the child might need. YCS also operates an autism learning center in Montclair with several annexes located within public school districts to provide specialized learning programs for children on the spectrum of autism. YCS outreach programs include home visitation services and mental health clinics where children and their families can work together in their own homes and communities. Our home care services provide one-on-one care for children with developmental disabilities and their families. YCS also offers respite service, day programs, and therapeutic nursery schools – all designed to help children and families regain their emotional strength without disrupting their lives any further. YCS programs have shown proven results toward each child’s survival and future success. The YCS Foundation was created to assist community partners, corporations and individuals to make a difference in the lives of the children and young adults we serve. While YCS provides the care, you can provide the critical support to ensure that we can help those children who need us. Please reach into your hearts and reach out to YCS.
