Mission Statement

Around The Block (ATB) [aka: Al Doblar La Esquina; legal name: Around The Block, Inc.], founded in November 2000, incorporated in June 2001, and granted Federal status as a tax –exempt (501c3) not-for-profit organization in March 2002; registered as a charity in New York State] is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to cultivating arts and technologies in urban communities, particularly lower income neighborhoods of New York City. We believe that arts, technology and the health of urban communities are strongly interdependent.

About This Cause

We have developed programs - workgroups and classes, exhibitions and performances (including regular theatrical readings). These programs are based on community participation in arts and technologies. We involve people of lower and moderate income neighborhoods in developing artistic expression and technological skills. We welcome and encourage participants from all cultural backgrounds and without preconditions on their levels of expertise. Activities Focusing on the neighborhoods of Manhattan from river to river, we have conducted • ongoing workgroups and classes on theatre, business and finance, visual arts, systems and web technology; New York theatre history and language • urban-focused productions and readings • urban-focused art exhibits, Many of our programs are free to the public and take place at branches of the New York Public Library. We contribute to enriching the lives of the communities the library serves. At the same time we help to familiarize people with the Library's various services and activities. Achievement Milestones In addition to quarterly public readings, we have produced: • In A New York Minute • A View From The Fire Escape • Reflection In Asphalt • Recovery Blip Or Double Dip? 2004 • Short Rides On The Local • Suddenly: Los Nuevayores • The Spanish Connection • Upside On The Lower East • There Goes The Neighborhood!! • La Manajata Bequixed • Concrete Meets Silicon • Recovery Blip Or Double Dip? 2013 Our production sites have included libraries, public schools and Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, Spanish Repertory Theatre, Chernuchin Theater, Teatro SEA, Theatre East 4th Street. Four of our plays have been selected for the Samuel French Short Play Festival in New York. Around The Block has produced these plays – some as Equity Showcase productions – at the Festival: One Short Leg View, by David Nieves The Pain Inside, by Carlos Jerome The Reading Lesson, by Carlos Jerome Magnolia, by Sona Robbins Cohen Playwrights from around the world submit plays to our Raymond J. Flores Short Play Festival, focused on New York City life and dreams (listed in the Dramatists Guild Resource Guide). In 2004, we included our show, Recovery Blip Or Double Dip? in the Imagine Festival, of which we were one of the producing companies. The festival was awarded an Obie (Village Voice Off Off Broadway) special citation. Partnership and Support 1. We receive participant dues/contributions. 2.
