Mission Statement

At WEP's Leadership Academy, young women (ages 15+) in India overcome the debilitating issues of poverty to become leaders, prepared to earn and make lasting change in their own lives, families and communities. Since 2002, WEP has recognized the unlimited potential in each of its over 4,000 graduates. As part of its strategic plan to first scale across India, WEP is exploring providing its program to organizations outside of India.

About This Cause

Our vision is to ensure that young women in under-resourced communities gain the skills, confidence, mentorship and networks to pursue future-focused careers. In India and around the world, social and economic barriers prevent women from under-resourced communities from entering formal employment. Only 19% of working-age women in India and 39% globally participate in the formal labor force, and even fewer hold decision-making positions. Their exclusion from the economy, their voice missing from decision making on today’s most urgent problems has far-reaching consequences – for themselves, their families, communities and the world. Founded in 2002 on the belief that every woman holds a spark to ignite change, Women's Education Project provides the Leadership Academy, a holistic, career-readiness program, anchored in a sisterhood and a community of mentors and role models. In 2025 WEP launched LAMP (Leadership Academy in My Pocket) a low-bandwidth mobile platform, created with WEP students, that tech-enables the Academy's career development program. Through each of the 12 modules, exploring 12 different career paths, students gain foundational knowledge, future-focused skills: digital literacy, networking, critical thinking, collaboration, curiosity, creativity and communication. Our Impact: 81% of alumnae have entered formal employment or further education. 89% of employed alumnae are satisfied with their careers. 75% of students have learned new skills. 94% of students are actively learning new skills and seeking guidance. 92% of students receive regular mentorship. 43% of alumnae are mentors. WEP graduates are IT technicians, teachers, social workers, nurses, police officers and entrepreneurs. Among them are a lawyer, a journalist, a dentist, a risk Manager, a librarian.
